Education, teacher training – Research and researchers

Education, teacher training, conducts high-quality and internationally recognized interdisciplinary research on sustainable teaching and teachers’ work

In our research we push the boundaries of how we understand education, learning and teaching today, and question underlying assumptions and norms about teachers, students, as well as the teaching practice. We innovate our research epistemologically, methodologically, and disciplinarily, and attend to issues concerning schools beyond the immediate institutional settings of teaching. Our research understands the aim of schooling as the development of civic engagement and moral agency: the capacity to contribute meaningfully towards the betterment of society, which foregrounds civic virtues as part of continuous negotiations and shared meaning-making, rather than knowledge achievements as an end goal in itself.

We engage and involve participants and communities in co-designing and co-creating responsible research and innovation and explore collaborative and transformative research methodologies that empower research participants in ways that place their experiences and capacities at the heart of knowledge co-generation. Through interdisciplinary research on sustainable teaching and teachers’ work, pedagogy (teacher training) revisits how a Finnish perspective on pedagogy can develop to face the (still) future challenges of ecological and social sustainability, as it develops teacher education for the future with contextualized research of the Finnish educational system.
