Cell Biology

Major subject – Cell Biology

The cell and its molecules make up the central building blocks of all life on earth. Cell biology gives you in-depth knowledge of cell structure and function, cellular differentiation and development, and how disorders in these processes might arise. Through your studies in cell biology at Åbo Akademi University, you will learn about cell stress, cell survival and cell death, cellular decision-making processes, the role of the cytoskeleton, as well as the relation between inflammatory processes and tissue damages, tissue regeneration and tissue degeneration. Studies in cell biology are also of use in interdisciplinary research, for example when it comes to biomaterials and nanoparticles.

The studies in cell biology consist of advanced courses, where both theory and practical lab work play important parts. Optional courses allow you both to focus on the themes you find interesting within cell biology, and to broaden your education with courses from other fields of study. Cell biology is part of the Scientia Aboensis-collaboration Molecular Cell Biology. The Scientia Aboensis-collaboration allows you to participate in courses offered by the University of Turku as well as Åbo Akademi University. Remember that you can apply to cell biology without having knowledge of Swedish!

The job market for cell biologists is extremely broad and the opportunities for work are very good. After you have completed your degree, there are opportunities for you to work both in national and international settings. Some of the areas that cell biologists find work are in pharmaceutical companies, the biotechnology industry and and the food industry, as well as within universities. Cell biologists also work as consultant, in public laboratories and within research administration. As a cell biologist, your future is full of opportunities!
