There is a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, and this trend is also observed in Finland. There is demand for both specialized experts and professionals whose jobs require wide-ranging cybersecurity skills.

Finnish universities educate cybersecurity specialists primarily through degree programmes. However, continuous learning opportunities remain limited in both availability and content. Current university offerings are not easily adaptable for continuous learning, as factors such as course structures, teaching methods, and limited resources hinder the provision of training for individuals seeking to develop their cybersecurity expertise through continuous learning.

Cybersecurity education offered by universities could be improved in the context of continuous learning by developing existing educational practices. This requires a deeper understanding of the current state of education and areas for development. It is also important to study and learn from international universities that have established approaches to organizing continuous learning in cybersecurity. In this way, good practices can be identified and adapted to support the development of Finnish cybersecurity education.

During the project, a network of eight Finnish universities will develop measures through which universities’ cybersecurity education could be better integrated into continuous learning offerings.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to develop strategic approaches for aligning university-level cybersecurity education with the needs of working life, following the principles of continuous learning.

The project specifically aims to:
– Strengthen collaboration between Finnish universities
– Develop flexible and scalable cybersecurity education models
– Improve the alignment between education and labour market needs

In the long term, the project supports the development of a highly skilled cybersecurity workforce in Finland.
