Fibre and Cellulose Technology (FCT)

Fibre and Cellulose Technology (FCT)

The six points of biomass engineering: Topochemistry, Nanotechnology, Fibres, Bioenergy, Sustainable processes, Eco-materials

Biomass Engineering is the common nominator for FCT. The Biomass used in our research include wood, ie. hardwood and softwood, as well as annual plants. Engineering include the processing of the biomass, i.e. chemical and mechanical pre-treatments, fractionation, bleaching, regeneration, low consistency refining and stock preparation.

At FCT, we have the research set-up that makes it possible for us to investigate the whole value chain from raw material through processing until post-treatment and the final product.

By exploring different biomass engineering topics, we have gained expertise is the utilisation of biomass for the production of wood based fibres, biopolymers, and biofuels. Some current topics we investigate are smart fibres, functional cellulosic beads, cellulosic bioplastics, bioactive materials based on hemicelluloses, and hydrotropic lignin.

Mission Contribute to the development of new knowledge in biomass science and technology through research-based education and high-quality research.
Vision Create an attractive environment for students and researchers that is recognized by scientific community, industry and overall society.
