Special criteria for admission to the Doctoral Programme in Psychology and Speech and Language Pathology

In addition to the general criteria for admission to a doctoral programme at Åbo Akademi University, a grade of no less than 4 (or magna cum laude approbatur) on the preceding thesis (Master’s thesis or equivalent) is required. If your thesis is given a grade lower than 4 (or magna cum laude approbatur), the proposed supervisor must submit a written recommendation on your behalf.

The research plan should be written according to the instructions in the individual study plan (ISP). You will find the ISP and further information at Apply for Doctoral Studies.

 

Study plan for the Doctoral Programme in Psychology and Speech and Language Pathology

The Doctoral degree (240 credits) includes:

  • Research studies (35 credits)
  • Course in philosophy, Doing Research in Human Sciences (5 credits)
  • Doctoral dissertation (thesis) (200 credits)

If you choose to complete your Licentiate degree (120 credits), this includes:

  • Research studies (35 credits)
  • Course in philosophy, Doing Research in Human Sciences (5 credits)
  • Licentiate thesis (80 credits)

A Doctoral degree taken after a Licentiate degree only includes the Doctoral dissertation (thesis) (120 credits).

In the individual study plan (ISP), you must state the year in which you plan to complete your degree. The average length of time needed is 60 credits per academic year in full-time studies, amounting to 4 years in total. If you deviate from this schedule, you must provide an explanation for doing so.

A maximum of 20 credits may be earned in this group

  • Scientific writing and subject specialisation (essay and report), number of credits at the discretion of the examiner
  • Subject specialisation (reading course), e.g. 2 credits for a maximum of 300 standard pages
