Radiation safety at Åbo Akademi University

Radiation safety at Åbo Akademi University

Åbo Akademi University utilises both equipment that generates ionizing radiation and various sealed sources of radiation. The radiation generating equipment includes particle accelerators used as radionuclide generators and x-ray appliances for material characterization. The production of radionuclides for medical diagnostics takes place at the Turku PET Centre in compliance with the relevant quality system (EU-GMP).

Operations involving the use of ionizing radiation require a radiation safety licence granted by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). Being responsible for radiation safety, the management of Åbo Akademi University appoints radiation safety officers to oversee that all operations are in compliance with the Radiation Act and the terms of the radiation safety licence. Åbo Akademi University also has a radiation safety workgroup tasked with the maintenance of good safety culture and provision of internal training in radiation safety matters. The workgroup shall also ensure proper information exchange between the university management and the users of ionizing radiation.
