The prices of doctoral hats from E.R. Wahlman Oy (incl. VAT) are as follows:

• Doctor of Technology hat: €887
• Doctor of Theology hat: €751
• Other doctoral hats (Philosophy, Medicine, Political Science, Economics and Business Administration, Law, and Pharmacy): €786

The price includes the lyre appropriate to the hat as well as a black factory-made hat box.

When ordering a hat, it is also possible to purchase a birch veneer hat box at the reduced price of €119.

When ordering a hat, a doctoral sword may also be purchased at the promotional price of €395, plus €15 for engraving.

Without a hat order, the price of the doctoral sword is €406, plus €15 for engraving.

The price includes a complete package: measurement, materials, craftsmanship, the lyre, a sturdy storage box, and a fabric carrying bag.

Each hat is handcrafted to individual measurements using high-quality materials. An appointment for measurements must be booked in advance, and the delivery schedule can be adapted to the customer’s timetable. However, approximately two weeks should be reserved from the measurement appointment for the hat to be completed.

Measurements are taken in Turku at the workshop studio on Rauhankatu 12 A, Stairwell C. Self-measurement at a distance is also possible for those who are unable to travel to Turku.

Measurement appointments must be booked in advance. Detailed instructions will be provided before the visit. I can be most reliably found at the studio at the agreed appointment time.

Individual measurements for doctoral hats are taken at the Helsinki Hat Factory hat studio in Arabianranta, Helsinki. Appointments are available by prior arrangement.

The Turku-based hat maker Osk Ateljee’s Aboa produces high-quality doctoral hats by hand using traditional methods. Measurements for the hat are taken by appointment in Turku.

• Doctoral hat: €750 (straight brim, black satin)
• Doctoral hat for Doctors of Technology: €875 (upturned brim, ribbon, black satin)

Prices include the hat, lyre, hat box, and VAT (25.5%). Any shipping costs are charged separately.

The making of a doctoral hat is a skilled craft process that may take several weeks. You should therefore allow for a delivery time of several months from the date of ordering.

As many conferment ceremonies in Finland traditionally take place during May and June, demand for doctoral hats is particularly high during the preceding winter and spring. We therefore recommend that you place your order well in advance, preferably already during autumn 2026. This will help ensure that your hat is completed and delivered in good time before the conferment ceremony.

When should I order my doctoral sword?

Doctoral swords are not manufactured in Finland. Depending on the supplier, they are typically produced in Germany or China and subsequently engraved by the retailer in Finland. Demand for doctoral swords is generally not as high as the demand for doctoral hats during a conferment year, and delivery times are therefore usually less affected by seasonal demand.

Joint doctoral sword order through Åbo Akademi University

In connection with the Conferment Ceremony, Åbo Akademi University will organize a joint order of doctoral swords through Guldsmed AU Holmberg in Turku.

The order will be placed through the University, and the swords will be delivered to Åbo Akademi University, ensuring that they are available for the conferment participants at the ceremony. Each participant will be invoiced directly by AU Holmberg for their sword.

The joint order will open later in autumn 2026. Information and ordering instructions will be sent by email to those who have pre-registered and officially registered for the Conferment Ceremony.

• Doctoral hat with lyre – approximately €550–900, depending on the model and supplier
• Lyre only – approximately €75–100, depending on the model and supplier
• Doctoral sword with Åbo Akademi University’s Brahe wings and personal engraving (name and date) – approximately €350–450, depending on the supplier

Borrowing a doctoral hat

A doctoral hat is highly personal, particularly in terms of its size and shape, which are tailored to fit the wearer (only limited adjustments can be made using inserts). It is possible to borrow a hat from a colleague, friend, or family member, provided that it corresponds to the correct doctoral degree and bears the appropriate lyre.

However, obtaining your own hat is strongly recommended. A doctoral promotion is a significant milestone, and for those pursuing an academic career, the doctoral hat is an important symbol that may be worn on future academic occasions.

Borrowing a doctoral sword

A doctoral sword can often be borrowed from a colleague, friend, or family member. Åbo Akademi University also has a limited number of loan swords available. These are primarily reserved for Jubilee Doctors and for conferees travelling long distances to attend the Conferment Ceremony.
