Scholarships for master students

Scholarships are available for students in international master’s degree programmes. Applicants and students liable to pay a tuition fee can apply for a scholarship to cover a part or the whole tuition fee. On this page you can read about the different types of scholarships and how to apply for them.

Please note that decisions regarding all scholarships mentioned below are final and may not be appealed.

 

Please note that the tuition fee scholarship (waiver) is granted only once (i.e. in connection with the admission to Åbo Akademi University). All students are entitled to apply for student scholarships for other purposes during their studies.

Åbo Akademi University tuition fee scholarships

 

Tuition fee-paying (non EU/EEA) applicants applying to our master degree programmes can apply for the Finland scholarship (in connection with applying for studies at Åbo Akademi University).

Finland scholarship/100% Tuition Fee Scholarship (waiver), awarded for 2 years (second year conditional)

  • Number of scholarships to be granted: 1/programme

Finland Scholarships awarded by Åbo Akademi University are part of the national Finland Scholarship programme. This scholarship will be awarded to the most merited applicant in each programme.

The Finland scholarship covers a 100% of the tuition fee for two years, the second year is conditional and requires that the student has earned at least 55 ECTS during the first year of studies.

In addition the applicant is awarded a one time 5000€ relocation grant, which will be paid to the student, to a Finnish bank account, once they have arrived to Turku/Vaasa and enrolled as present for the academic year.

To be considered for the Finland scholarship you must apply for it as part of your application for admission during the application period. Applicants will find, in the application form, a set of questions evaluating motivation and communicative skills, academic goals and general interest in the field. The applicant’s answers will be assessed by the programme and the scholarship committee. The committee decides which applicants will be awarded a Finland scholarship. The decision on the granted scholarship will be included in the admission letter.

Please note that if you are exempted from paying tuition fees, you will no longer be eligible for Finland scholarships.

80% Tuition Fee Scholarship (waiver), awarded for the whole length of the study right

  • This scholarship is granted to all admitted applicants liable to pay tuition fees, who have not received a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship

Åbo Akademi University tuition fee scholarships

Tuition fee paying applicants can apply for a scholarship to cover a part or the whole tuition fee. The following scholarship categories are available:

100% Tuition Fee Scholarship (waiver), awarded for 2 years (second year conditional)

  • Number of scholarships to be granted: 2/programme

Åbo Akademi University wants through this scholarship to recognize motivated applicants who have performed well in their previous studies. This scholarship is granted to a limited number of admitted applicants. The second year is conditional and the scholarship holder will need to show that they have kept a steady pace in their studies and will be able to graduate within two years (the progress of the studies is checked in May).

The decision to grant the 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship is based on:

  • the academic performance of the applicant in their previous studies
  • how well the applicant meets the programme requirements
  • the answers the applicants have given in relation to their motivation and goals.

  • Number of scholarships to be granted: This scholarship is granted to all admitted applicants liable to pay tuition fees, who have not received a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship

Tuition-fee liable applicants apply for the scholarship as part of their application for admission during the application period. Applicants will find, in the application form, a set of questions evaluating motivation and communicative skills, academic goals and general interest in the field. The applicant’s answers will be assessed by the programme and the scholarship committee. The scholarship committee decides which category will be awarded to each admitted applicant. The decision on the granted scholarship will be included in the admission letter. If your status with regards to tuition fees change during your studies you can apply for the scholarship also during your studies, in which case you will be awarded the 80% tuition fee scholarship (waiver), contact admission@abo.fi for further information.

Åbo Akademi University tuition fee scholarships

This scholarship is granted upon admission. Åbo Akademi University wants through its scholarships recognize motivated applicants who have performed well in their previous studies. Tuition fee-paying (non EU/EEA) applicants can apply for a scholarship to cover a part or the whole tuition fee. The following scholarship categories are available:

  • Tuition Fee Scholarship, covering 100 % of the tuition fee, awarded for 2 years (second year conditional)
  • Tuition Fee Scholarship, covering 50 % of the tuition fee, awarded for 2 years (second year conditional)

Scholarships are granted to up to 30 % of the admitted students who are subject to tuition fees and have applied for a scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded for two years, the second year is conditional and depends on the progress of the studies. In order to secure the scholarship for the second year, a scholarship holder must earn at least 55 ECTS (for 100% scholarships)/ 45 ECTS (for 50% scholarships) during the first academic year (the progress of the studies is checked at the end of May).

The decision to grant a scholarship is based on:

  • the academic performance of the applicant in their previous studies
  • how well the applicant meets the programme requirements
  • the answers the applicants have given in relation to their motivation and goals

To be considered for the Åbo Akademi University tuition fee scholarship you must apply for the scholarship as part of your application for admission during the application period. Applicants will find, in the application form, a set of questions evaluating motivation and communicative skills, academic goals and general interest in the field. The applicant’s answers will be assessed by the programme and the scholarship committee. The committee decides which applicants will be awarded a scholarship as well as which category will be awarded. The decision on the granted scholarship will be included in the admission letter.

Second year scholarships

This scholarship is open for all those students who have paid their tuition fees during the first year or have received a tuition fee scholarship covering 50% of the tuition fee in the first year. Åbo Akademi University wants through its scholarships recognize motivated applicants who have performed well in their studies during their first year at our university.

The requirement to receive this scholarship is 55 ECTS earned during the first academic year and a good motivation to continue the studies. Students interested should email admission@abo.fi by 1 June, include the following information in your email:

  • Your full name
  • The programme you have been admitted to
  • Previous scholarship(s), if awarded
  • Credits so far, and credits to be registered within July

Students applying for this scholarship will be informed of the outcome in July.

This scholarship is for students who are liable to pay tuition fee, have already studied for two years and need additional time to complete their studies. The requirement to receive this scholarship is excellent academic performance and an assessment of the reasons for delayed studies.

  • The reasons for the delay of your studies
  • A plan on how you aim to finish your studies during a 5th term
