Supplementary studies for non-degree students (extra students)

Supplementary studies for non-degree students (extra students)

You can apply for a right to study as an extra student in order to complete one or a few courses offered at Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU). Extra students participate in daytime courses and study under the same conditions as regular students at the university. There will be no special arrangements. Supplementary studies do not give you the right to graduate.

You can apply for supplementary studies if you are currently living in Finland and have the need to complete one or a few specific courses offered at ÅAU. Supplementary students are not entitled to student financial aid or any other social benefits for students. Studying as a supplementary student does not give the right to study as a regular student at ÅAU, nor does it constitute an eligible basis for a visa application.

If the course is full or if the course’s prerequisites are not met, the study right is not granted. Some subjects and / or courses do not accept any extra students.

The application for extra students is continuous and the courses should be defined in a study plan and be submitted at least two weeks before the start of the course.

  1. In order to know what courses you can apply for it is advisable to first contact extra@abo.fi. You can also be in contact with the study advisor at the faculty or the subject you are interested in.

You can apply for courses offered one term (autumn or spring term) or the academic year (autumn and spring term).

Once the application is processed, we will send the decision about the right to supplementary studies to you by e-mail.

Fees

From August 1, 2024, Åbo Akademi University will implement a pricing system for its courses based on the number of study credits. The pricing structure will be as follows:

  • Basic Studies (and other introductory courses): 12 euro per credit.
  • Intermediate Studies and Advanced Studies: 15 euro per credit.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning at ÅAU (CLL) collects the fee from extra students who have been admitted to one or more courses. An administrative fee of 30 euros is charged in cases where you choose to interrupt your studies or withdraw your application after you have been granted a study right.

Those registered as unemployed in Finland, asylum seekers and Ukrainian citizens will have the opportunity to participate free of charge, as well as students at the upper secondary level. For more information, please contact extra@abo.fi.
