Student Health Care Services

Degree students’ access healthcare from the Finnish Student Health care services (FSHS). There is Student Healthcare Service units all over Finland, and they offer these services among others:

  • Healthcare
  • Dental care
  • Mental health care

Healthcare fee for students

Since 1 January 2021 the student health care fee is paid directly to KELA. You need to pay the fee even if you do not receive student financial aid or if you use occupational or other health services instead of the FSHS.

You are entitled to use the student health services to the end of the term for which you have registered as attending. If you graduate during the term, you are entitled to use the student health services to the end of the term in question.

Students at bachelors or masters level that are enrolled as present, also if you are on an exchange abroad

  • Students at bachelor’s or a master’s level that are enrolled as absent
  • Students at bachelor’s or a master’s level who have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland or the United Kingdom
  • Exchange students from other countries than Finland
  • PhD students
  • Students doing specialization studies or separate study modules

Please be aware, that if you are a PhD student, exchange student, enrolled as absent or doing a separate study module you are not entitled to use the student healthcare services.

If you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland or the United Kingdom, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee. However, you can to use the FSHS’s services. You are not billed for the student healthcare fee but must make sure to pay it in OmaKela or via bank transfer each academic semester. You find instructions on how to make the payment on the KELA website.

The due date for paying the student healthcare fee is determined based on the date on which you register as attending: ‘

  • If you enrolled as present for the autumn semester before 30 September – the deadline is 30 September
  • If you enrolled as present for the autumn semester after 1 October– the deadline is 31 December
  • If you enrolled as present for the spring semester before 31 January – the deadline is 31 January
  • If you enrolled as present for the spring semester after 1 February – the deadline is 31 July
