The Baltic University Programme (BUP) focuses on sustainable development, environmental protection, and democracy in the Baltic Sea Region. Its aim is to create new opportunities for interaction, learning, and collaboration between universities, as well as between academia and society at large. Founded in 1991, BUP is a university network comprising more than 120 participating universities in ten countries within the Baltic Sea catchment area.
BUP addresses issues related to sustainable development, environmental protection, and democracy in the Baltic Sea Region. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the network supports universities in their efforts to promote democracy, peace, and sustainable development. This is achieved through the development of university courses, support for multidisciplinary research collaborations, and engagement in transdisciplinary projects carried out in cooperation with public authorities and other stakeholders.
BUP develops and offers academic courses for undergraduate and graduate students, doctoral candidates, and higher education teachers. These courses are hosted by different universities within the network and are open to participants from BUP member universities throughout the Baltic Sea Region. In addition to courses, BUP organises conferences and other activities that contribute to building strong regional education and research communities.
The Baltic University Programme Coordinating Secretariat at Uppsala University, Sweden, coordinates the network. Associate Secretariats are situated in Finland (Åbo Akademi University), Poland and Germany. Every member country has its own national center.
