The Nordic Geological Winter Meeting to be held in Turku

The 37th Nordic Geological Winter Meeting will be held at Logomo in Turku on January 13–15, 2026. The Nordic Geological Winter Meeting brings together researchers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and nearby regions, representing all fields of geosciences. This year, more than 500 researchers will participate, and the program includes over 470 presentations. Organized since 1954, the meeting is a biennial tradition within the Nordic geoscience community and is held in Finland every ten years.

The organizing committee of the conference includes representatives from the Geological Society of Finland as well as staff from the geosciences departments of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, and the University of Helsinki. The three-day conference features scientific sessions, including oral presentations and poster sessions, as well as an exhibition showcasing a wide range of current content related to the field. This year’s conference theme is “A World in Transition,” highlighting the interdisciplinary and forward-looking nature of geosciences and their key role in research on climate change and natural resources.

The conference will feature three internationally renowned invited speakers:
Professor P. David Polly is a paleontologist and evolutionary biologist at Indiana University, specializing in vertebrate paleontology. He has conducted extensive research in evolutionary biology and is one of the world’s leading experts in morphometrics. Polly has, among other things, innovatively combined animal phylogenies with their geographical distribution in a geological time framework.

Secretary General Julie Hollis is the Secretary General of EuroGeoSurveys. She has extensive experience in leadership roles at geological research institutions in several countries and a background in regional geological mapping. In her talk, she will address the transformation of energy systems and how geopolitical factors shape supply chains and resource utilization.

The third invited speaker is the recipient of the Nordic Geoscientist Award, which recognizes a long and successful career. The award winner will be announced on January 14, 2026.
