Record-breaking interest in EDISS

This year’s scholarship application round for the EDISS Master’s Programme received a record number of 1133 submitted applications from talented students around the world. The application round closed on Thursday, 8 January 2026, and attracted applicants from 88 countries.

Two additional application rounds are forthcoming, providing further opportunities to become part of the EDISS community:
📅 Application round for tuition fee waiver scholarship: 25.02-11.03.2026.
📅  Application round for self-funded students: 13.04-20.04.2026.

Since its launch in 2020, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Engineering of Data-intensive Intelligent Software Systems (EDISS) has firmly established Åbo Akademi University as a leading institution in computer engineering and artificial intelligence education. The programme has welcomed 108 outstanding students from around the world, and interest in EDISS continues to rise.

EDISS has secured a total of €8 million in funding from the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The programme has consistently attracted high-achieving students from top-ranked universities worldwide, and all graduates have completed their studies on time.

EDISS is offered in close partnership with Mälardalen University (Sweden), the University of L’Aquila (Italy), and the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain). Graduates receive a double degree from Åbo Akademi University and one of the partner institutions.

EDISS is collaborating with 40 industrial partners and 11 universities worldwide. The program has had a significant economic and industrial impact in Finland.

“While students spend their second academic year abroad, the majority return after graduation: over 80% of alumni are recruited by Finnish companies, strengthening the country’s competitiveness in software engineering, AI, machine learning, and data science” says Professor Sébastien Lafond, the EDISS programme director.
