Students from countries outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland pay tuition fees at Finnish universities. In this application round, they also paid an application fee of 100 euros for the first time. The purpose of the fee was to curb the number of applications, which had risen sharply in recent years, and to improve the quality of applications.
“At least the first part of the goal has been achieved. Whether the applications are also of higher quality will be known only after the academic review. However, based on the eligibility check we conduct centrally at Åbo Akademi University’s Educational Services, the level generally seems to be higher. Overall, the result looks promising already at this stage,” says Gurli-Maria Gardberg, Section head at Åbo Akademi University’s Educational Services.
“It is gratifying that the interest in our English-language master’s programmes remains high, confirming Åbo Akademi University’s strong position as an internationally attractive place to study. We now look forward to welcoming many of the applicants to campus this autumn,” says Gunilla Widén, Vice-Rector of Education at Åbo Akademi University.
The second joint application round of the spring will be held from March 11 to 25, 2025, during which applications can be submitted for university programmes in Finnish and Swedish.
