Special criteria for admission to the Doctoral Programme in Theology

In addition to the general criteria for admission to a doctoral programme at Åbo Akademi University, a grade of no less than 4 (or magna cum laude approbatur) on the preceding thesis (Master’s thesis or equivalent) is required. If your thesis is given a grade lower than 4 (or magna cum laude approbatur), the proposed supervisor must submit a written recommendation on your behalf.

The research plan should be written according to the instructions in the individual study plan (ISP). You will find the ISP and further information at Apply for a doctoral study right.

 

The research studies within the Doctoral Programme in Theology (30 credits) should support the dissertation work. The doctoral researcher plans their studies together with their supervisors and/or head of subject. The studies may be completed at Åbo Akademi University or at another university.

 

Study plan for the Doctoral Programme in Theology

The Doctoral degree includes:

  • Research studies (30 credits)
  • Doctoral dissertation (thesis)

If you choose to complete your Licentiate degree , this includes:

  • Research studies (30 credits)
  • Licentiate thesis

A Doctoral degree taken after a Licentiate degree only includes a Doctoral dissertation (thesis).

In the individual study plan (ISP), you must state the year in which you plan to complete your degree. The estimated time needed for a doctoral degree (full-time studies) amounts to 3-4 years. If you deviate from this schedule, you must provide an explanation for doing so.

 

Examples for research studies within the Doctoral Programme in Theology

  • Presentation of the dissertation (thesis) work for an international scholarly audience, max 5 credits (activre participation in conference  (lecture, poster), 1-2 credits/conference; participation including a written report 1-2 credits
  • Examining or supervising bachelor’s/master’s thesis (for instance examining a master’s thesis, 1-2 cr
  • Teaching at the university, 1-5 credits/course

  • Transferrable skills and working life experience, 5-10 credits
