Doctoral studies

Doctoral studies at Åbo Akademi University are organised in the form of doctoral programmes. A faculty may have several doctoral programmes and a single doctoral programme can have one or more major subjects.

Together, the doctoral programmes comprise the Graduate School at Åbo Akademi University.

Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) participates in the Doctoral+ (Tohtori+) collaboration

Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) participates in the Doctoral+ (Tohtori+) collaboration, which allows doctoral researchers to apply for the right to pursue doctoral courses at another Finnish university as part of their doctoral degree. These studies are free of charge for doctoral researchers, and no invoicing takes place between the universities. The host university informs the doctoral researcher of the granted study place and issues a transcript of completed studies. The home university decides whether the studies can be included in the degree.

Available courses at Åbo Akademi are listed in the Study Guide. If you are a doctoral researcher at one of these universities, you can apply for study rights for courses at ÅAU via our electronic application form.
An application doesn´t automatically mean that you´re accepted to the course.

*Please note: The University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University have a separate agreement that allow doctoral researchers to participate in each other´s courses free of charge.
