Students at Åbo Akademi University and Novia have actively participated in the Library space planning process

The library services in Turku will move to newly renovated facilities in 2027. At that time, all library and archive services will be brought together in the Stjärnan block: course books will be available through self-service lending in Astra, while all other library services will be concentrated in the historic library building next to the Cathedral, which is currently being renovated. The library’s participatory space planning process has been underway throughout spring 2026 and will continue during autumn 2026.

Students at Åbo Akademi University and Novia University of Applied Sciences in Turku have had the opportunity to submit their wishes and vote on specific interior design issues through whiteboards placed on campus and via a Padlet wall. This approach has generated a wealth of valuable feedback. The topics have included different types of seating and group study spaces, as well as sound environments. In addition, a workshop was arranged together with Sarc + Sigge Arkitekter Ltd. on the interior design of one space where the planning process was still open.

The participatory process has provided the library with valuable insights into how important it is for students to have access to a unique environment for focused study in the city centre. Many students appreciated the former silent reading room and wish to retain opportunities for quiet study in general. We have received important guidance for the interior design planning, such as the fact that proper desks and chairs are the highest priority, although some soft seating is also appreciated. Functionality is emphasised, and the need for a sufficient number of power outlets at study spaces is a detail mentioned by many respondents. It is also interesting to note that some students come to the library because studying together with one or more friends helps motivate them.

Doctoral researchers were also invited to complete a survey about what would make the library a place where they would enjoy working. The survey is still open for responses. Participation through the whiteboards and Padlet will also continue throughout autumn 2026.

The library would like to thank everyone who has shared their opinions and ideas so far.
