Nina Kopola joins Åbo Akademi University Board as new external member

The Collegiate Body of Åbo Akademi University has confirmed the external members of the University Board for 2026 at its meeting on 18 November.

Nina Kopola is also an Honorary Doctor at Åbo Akademi University.

The Board is the University’s highest decision-making body, comprising six representatives from the University community and four external members.

Gunvor Kronman, Anna Lindén and Dag Wallgren will continue as external members, while Nina Kopola was appointed as a new external member. External members are elected for one year at a time.

Nina Kopola is Senior Advisor at AIMS International and former Director General of Business Finland. She has extensive experience in international business leadership and has served as CEO of Suominen Corporation as well as in senior roles in global companies such as Dynea and Neste Chemicals. Kopola also brings broad board experience from major listed companies such as Metso and Konecranes, as well as several other organisations. She holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Licentiate of Technology from Åbo Akademi University and is also an Honorary Doctor of Åbo Akademi University.

Representing Åbo Akademi University’s students and staff on the board are Kimmo Grönlund, Professor of Political Science; Lea Sistonen, Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology; Linnéa Henriksson, University Lecturer in Public Leadership; Dan Holm, Section Head; and student representatives Amanda Byskata and Jonne Kunnas. They have been elected for the term 1 January 2025–31 December 2027.

The current board has actively worked on developing and implementing Åbo Akademi University’s strategy, and continuity is essential as we move forward with the ongoing education reform. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Nina Kopola, with her extensive experience in strategic work,” says Elina Pirjatanniemi, Chair of the University Collegiate Body.
