Kmak and Zhang become members of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters

The members of the Academy are distinguished and widely respected Finnish and foreign scholars who are elected for life. Professors Magdalena Kmak and Hongbo Zhang were elected members at the Spring Meeting of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters on 17 April 2026.


Magdalena Kmak is Professor of Public International Law with a specialization in migration and minority research at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business, and Economics.

Her current research focuses on the multifaceted relationship between law and mobility, particularly in the context of global migration and minority regimes. Kmak currently serves, among other roles, as project leader and Consortium Director of the project “Diversity, Trust and Two-Way Integration (Mobile Futures)”. She is also one of the founders of the Nordic Network on Climate-Related Displacement and Mobility.

Hongbo Zhang is Professor of Pharmaceutical Biomaterials at Åbo Akademi University. His research focuses on new materials designed to improve the effectiveness of medicines, target their action, and facilitate drug delivery.

Zhang is the principal investigator of the Functional Materials for Medicine research group at the Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory at Åbo Akademi University. He is one of the principal investigators associated with the InFLAMES flagship, a joint organization of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University.

Hongbo Zhang is Professor of Pharmaceutical Biomaterials at Åbo Akademi University.
