ÅAU respects diversity – introduces a new sign for gender-neutral toilets

In the autumn of 2017 Åbo Akademi University decided to initiate gender-neutral toilets as proposed by the ÅAU Equality Committee. The purpose was to
meet the requirement to install gender-neutral toilets for those who have another gender identity than female or male. However, it has become obvious
that there have been misunderstandings during the process.

Åbo Akademi is a university that respects diversity and is concerned about creating discrimination-free study and working conditions. Although the intention was to respect and include everyone, the issue has unfortunately taken a negative turn.

In order to correct the situation, Åbo Akademi University will introduce gender-neutral toilet-signs along with the text WC, marked at single toilets and toilets for disabled persons. Toilets with several stalls will continue functioning as separate female and male toilets.
