The shared themes for the conferences

1. Teaching language and content in bi- and multilingual education 

  • early years, K–6, content-specific teaching from grade 7 onwards
  • building linguistic continuity and progression between educational stages
  • development of bi- and multilingual literacies 
  • scaffolding for reading and writing content in bi- and multilingual education  

2. Linguistic diversity in educational contexts 

  • practices for language-aware teaching and linguistically sensitive teaching
  • emerging bi- and multilingualism 
  • special educational needs in relation to bi- and multilingual education
  • learning effects of the presence of dominant and non-dominant languages in bi- and multilingual programmes
  • evaluation of language and content learning and implications for teaching strategies 

3. Preparing teachers for equity in linguistically diverse operational cultures 

  • teaching with a dual focus on developing the immersion and target language(s) as well as providing access to content 
  • developing teacher sensitivity towards linguistic diversity 
  • pre-service and in-service education for continued professional development
