The workshop will be held at Åbo Akademi University and is created for researchers on minoritized populations in political crises, transition and unrest.
It will tackle relations of sustenance and politics-making locally and cross-border, inter- and intra-communal. Discussions will be on how minoritized populations (ethnic and religious minorities, migrants/diaspora, women and queers) experience political unrest and transition in Europe and beyond (and the entanglement between Europe and what is beyond its borders).
The speakers are Dr. Ali Ali from University of Helsinki and Åbo Akademi University (Gender studies, religion and migration) and PhD researcher Alice al-Maleh from University of Lund. Al-Maleh holds an MA in International Development Studies and Cultural Encounters.
We invite speakers and scholars on political transition and accountability in European politics and cross-border relations to states, societies and communities in the wider so-called Middle East and Africa.

Speakers will draw on their research on people’s and communities’ navigation of war, borders and state institutions that govern these, to trace political mobilization and acts of support and sustenance. We will focus on how gender and kinship figure in the politics of transition, how people – minoritized, discriminated against and terrorized by war and genocidal actors – mobilize kinship relations within their countries of residence and across borders. We also map and discuss the political mobilization that people undertake to raise international awareness and to draw the attention of European governments, populations and diasporas to take a more informed and responsible stance on internal and external politics.
Warmly welcome to the event!
