Mikael Nygård to be new Rector of Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa

The Board decided that Professor Mikael Nygård, who was previously elected Vice-Rector for Education for the period 1.8.2025–31.7.2026, will be appointed Rector of Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa for the same period. Nygård is Professor of Social Policy at Åbo Akademi University’s campus in Vaasa.

The Rector in Vaasa has the special task of chairing the collegial administrative body in Vaasa and of contributing to the promotion of social contacts for Åbo Akademi University in the Vaasa region.

– As Rector of Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa, I have the opportunity, together with our researchers and other staff, to impact and contribute to the development of our operations. Our common goal is to continue to be an active social actor and partner for the region’s universities, with the City of Vaasa and the municipalities, the public and third sectors and the business community in the region, says Mikael Nygård.
