Lauri Rapeli, Taina Välimaa, Anna Törnroos-Remes and Daniel Lindberg inaugurated as professors at Åbo Akademi University

Four new professors were inaugurated in the Old Academy building in Turku on 25 September 2026.

Inaugurated from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FHS) is Professor in Political Science Lauri Rapeli and Professor in Speech and Language Pathology Taina Välimaa.

Inaugurated from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FNT) is Professor in Marine Ecology Anna Törnroos-Remes and Professor in High-Temperature Chemistry and Technology Daniel Lindberg.

The professors’ inauguration ceremony is one of the highlights of the academic year when the newly appointed professors give their inaugural lectures, which are open to the public.

Lauri Rapeli’s lecture had the title “Om den allmänna åsiktens rationalitet“.

Lauri Rapeli said in his speech that democracy can withstand differing opinions, but not separate realities.

Taina Välimaa lectured under the title “Hörselnedsättning: en riskfaktor för språk- och kommunikationsutveckling?“.

Taina Välimaa spoke, among other things, about how hearing impairment affects reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Anna Törnroos-Remes lectured under the title “Om arters roll i havets ekosystem – nyckeln till människans välmående och överlevnad“.

Anna Törnroos-Remes spoke about the importance of ensuring that knowledge of the roles different marine species play in the ecosystem is incorporated into decision-making.

Daniel Lindberg’s lecture was titled, “Högtemperaturkemi i framtidens industriella processer“.

In his speech, Daniel Lindberg highlighted the role of high-temperature chemistry in the ongoing green transition, particularly in the steel industry.

During the ceremony, music was performed by the Academic Orchestra under the direction of conductor Sauli Huhtala.
