Enrollment as present/absent – new admitted degree students

All students need to register either as present or as absent for every academic year.  In order to be registered as present and have the right to study, receive credits and have your study results registered, you must pay the Student union fee. The Student Union fee for the academic year 2019-2020 is 121 €. For more information about the Student Union fee and membership benefits, please visit the Student Union’s web pages.

New students in our International Master’s Degree Programmes start their studies in Åbo or Vasa with an orientation course on week 35.

ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION

You can pay the Student Union fee and register as present to Åbo Akademi University via My Studyinfo. However, if you cannot register in Studyinfo you can always register in person at Åbo Akademi University. You can register at studyinfo.fi by using Finnish internet banking codes, a Finnish electronic ID-card or a mobile certificate, you will get access to the My Studyinfo –service.

Electronic registration via Studyinfo for the Academic year 2019-2020 can be completed until 30.8.2019 at 15:00.

REGISTRATION IN PERSON (if you cannot register automatically via Studyinfo)

First-year students can register in person between 1.8-30.8.2019, Monday-Friday 12-15.

All students at the campus in Åbo register at the Student Office (Studentexpeditionen) in Gripen, Tavastgatan 13.
All students at the campus in Vasa register at the Student Office in Kvarnen, Strandgatan 2.

At registration you must present the following documents:

  • Proof of identification (e.g. passport)
  • Receipt that you have paid the Student Union fee (note that if you pay the student union fee using an internet bank, the filing number (arkiveringskod/ archivecode) must be written on the receipt)
  • Your original secondary school certificate and/or your original bachelor’s degree certificate as well as transcripts (or other documents required for eligibility, e.g. Master’s degree certificate) must be handed in for inspection (does not apply to Finnish degrees). The certificates will be returned to you after the registration period.
  • Your Letter of admission
  • Non-EU citizens need to show proof of either a paid tuition fee or a scholarship from ÅAU

If you are unable to arrive at Åbo Akademi University and register in person during the registration period due to problems with your residence permit, please contact the Education services for more information. If you fail to register during the time mentioned above you will lose your study entitlement.
New students must consider what is stated in the university law regarding the limited study time.

 

Enrollment as absent

According to the Universities Act/Polytechnics Act, a first-year student may register as absent for the academic year for the following reasons only:

1) service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);

2) maternity, paternity or parental leave;

3) the student cannot begin studies due to being incapacitated by personal illness or injury. (In this case, it should be made clear that this entails incapacity for the entire semester (or academic year).)

You may register your absence from Åbo Akademi University via Studyinfo, starting 28th of June and ending 30th of August, but you must prove the legal grounds for your absence. Documents proving the legal grounds for your absence should be sent via email or post, or presented to the Admissions Services. Your documents must be received by 30.8.2019 at 15.00 (CET+1). Documents sent by post must also arrive by this deadline.

If you do not present your documents by the deadline, you will lose your right to study.
