Åbo Akademi University arranged a doctoral conferral ceremony on May 25, 2018.
Persons holding a doctoral degree from Åbo Akademi University were conferred at Turku Concert Hall. This year 91 persons were conferred. Also, the Faculties conferred 13 Honorary Doctors, either for the person’s solid scientific merits or in acknowledgement of substantial contributions in society. Four persons, who have held a doctorate for 50 years, were also conferred as Jubilee Doctors.
The doctoral conferral ceremony started at 12.00 noon at Turku Concert Hall. After the conferral ceremony, the doctoral conferees and members of the Åbo Akademi University staff as well as guests from universities in the Nordic countries left the Hall in procession to Turku Cathedral for the conferral church service. In the evening, there was a Banquet at Turku Castle.
Åbo Akademi University holds the doctoral conferral ceremony roughly every other year. The university invites all those who have completed their doctoral degree at Åbo Akademi University and have not yet participated in the conferral ceremony. In the ceremony, the doctoral conferees receive the outward signs of the title: the doctoral hat, diploma and, in certain faculties, a doctoral sword or other insignia.
