Human relations with the sea in focus at the photo exhibition at the World Heritage Gateway gallery Arte Mare
All life on Earth is dependent on the sea. The marine ecosystem provides us with oxygen, climate regulation, nutrient circulation and food. At the same time, the sea serves us in ways that are equally significant but more difficult to measure, through experiences, inspiration and recreational opportunities.
In the Relations With the Sea exhibition at the World Heritage Gateway gallery Arte Mare at Korsholm, Anna Törnroos-Remes, marine biologist and researcher at Åbo Akademi University, and nature photographer Niclas Rantala study human relations to the sea.
The exhibition is a dialogue between science and art. Rantalas photographs are documentary and illustrate various aspects of the human relationship to the sea and its animals today. In most of the images the focus is on animals, not humans. The research is interlaced with art through images that highlight the importance of relationships within marine biological research and marine governance.
